With BC’s new Restart Plan announced on May 25th, we can gradually resume activities that were once taken for granted – such as dining indoors, gathering with friends, and roaming recreationally within our residential health zones.

As covid-19 cases curb and vaccination programs continue to make tremendous strides, the summer outlook for British Columbians is becoming decidedly optimistic.

Located within the Vancouver Health Region, the Sunshine Coast is one of the best local destinations to practice social distancing and reconnect with nature. With 180 kilometers of coastline to explore, inlets to paddle and hillsides to climb, you can breathe freely and move spaciously at your most comfortable pace.

A healthy dose of nature therapy – along with a thriving arts, culture and dining scene – is only a 40 minute sail from Horseshoe Bay.

If you’re ready to escape the city and find yourself in coastal bliss, now is the time to sail over and experience the true nature of the Sunshine Coast.

Here are six socially-distanced activities you should definitely consider:

  1. Visit the local breweries. From the 101 Brewhouse + Distillery to Tapworks and Persephone, you’ll find the cure to all of your ale-ments in Gibsons. Each brewery has a unique and inviting atmosphere, along with the most deliciously and carefully crafted beer. A true reflection of community and social connection.
  1. Take a hike. With a beautiful circuitry of wilderness trails spanning the entire coastline, there is no shortage of hiking routes. Soames Hill is a local favourite in Gibsons, and you’ll find an enchanted forest at Cliff Gilker Park in Roberts Creek. For a longer day hike, check out the Mount Elphinstone Summit Trail and the full Sunshine Coast Trail route legs.
  1. Kayak your way around paradise. Getting out on the water is a must-do on the Coast. In Gibsons, you’re just a short paddle away from Keats and Gambier islands. The Sechelt Inlet also offers stunning secluded views and calm waters to glide along. Pender Harbour is another local treasure trove for kayaking, canoeing and paddle boarding through myriad islands and islets, coves and bays.
  1. Dine by the sea. The Sunshine Coast boasts an embarrassment of dining options. While the pandemic has placed enormous pressure on restaurants and cafes, our local establishments have worked tirelessly to keep their doors open and serve the community. Top dine-out favourites in Gibsons include Smitty’s Oyster HouseLunitas Mexican EateryBuono OsteriaNagomi Sushi, the Pink House BistroChasters at Bonniebrook, and The Barefoot Gecko.
  1. Practice your swing. Did you know the Sunshine Coast is home to several world class golf courses? If you’re heading over, be sure to book a round at the Sunshine Coast Golf & Country Club in Roberts Creek. You can also make your way into Sechelt and try out the Blue Ocean Golf Club. A little further up in Madeira Park, you’ll find the Pender Harbour Golf Club, or as some of us locals call it – Billygoat Bluff.  Oh, it has hills. All courses offer varying degrees of challenge and fun.
  1. Spend an afternoon in Gibsons Landing. Fondly known as the backdrop in CBC’s famed series The Beachcombers, Gibsons Landing is an iconic community landmark. Here you can shop, stroll, and dine, while enjoying stunning views of Howe Sound and the north shore mountains. Local boutiques, art galleries, and restaurants/cafés line the Landing, along with Winegarden Waterfront Park.

Falling in love with the Sunshine Coast is pretty much guaranteed. Don’t be surprised if you decide to make the Coast your permanent home base.

The EagleView Heights Presentation Centre in Gibsons has reopened Thursday through Sunday from 10am – 5pm, with only a few beautiful oceanfront homes still remaining!
